HYALURONIC ACID:

The enormously moisturising and plumping effects of hyaluronic acid have been widely recognised in cosmetic preparations and in the form of injections for filling wrinkles and treating age-related loss of volume.

Hyaluronic acid is added to many cosmetic products that are designed to treat wrinkles, loss of elasticity and very dry or mature skin.

But the drawback with many such products is that they actually only contain a tiny amount of hyaluronic acid, as it is generally integrated into the product in gel form. So instead of the optimum concentration of 10-20% (the percentage of hyaluronic acid + water, in gel form), many creams and other products often contain a mere 0.1-0.2% of hyaluronic acid dry matter.

What is so fascinating about this active ingredient?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar-like biopolymer that is naturally produced in the body and that appears in the connective tissue of human skin. Its medical uses include the treatment of corneal defects, arthritic joints and acne scars. The active ingredient is able to bind many times its own weight in water – 1 gram of hyaluronic acid binds 6 litres of water – so it plumps up the skin. From the age of 20 onwards, the first fine lines start to appear. Hyaluronic acid preparations can be used in the correct dosage to smooth them away ‘from the inside’.

Low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid

Low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid with targeted molecule modification has excellent water binding properties in the epidermis. This results in the skin becoming noticeably softer. The low-molecular weight variety is a hyaluronic acid that in part contains acetyl groups (hydrophobic = repels water) rather than hydroxyl groups (hydrophilic = attracts water). This means it is better able to anchor itself to the surface of the stratum corneum. This reinforces the retention of moisture and counters transepidermal water loss.

Special hexapeptides work against laughter lines, because they reduce the intensity of muscle contraction and relax the facial features, thus assisting in gradually reducing line depth.
